People Management

Growing and managing teams.

From the first people to a team.

I’ve grown teams from zero to 15 people. Leading them means doing two jobs at once: setting the technical direction and looking after the people doing the work.

Growing as a team.

With four or five people, you just talk and decide at the desk. At fifteen that stops working: you need shared priorities and clear ownership.

My job is to hold the technical work and the people together. When everyone knows what we’re building and why, it’s easier to see where their own work fits.

A team grows when there’s room for feedback and autonomy: people share what they know, argue about decisions and own them together. Different skills are what make it work.
